Vampire Weekend :: Two doses of awesome

Vampire Weekend :: Two doses of awesome

Alright, so I love Rancid. I really love Rancid. And I really love Vampire Weekend. When the two are put together, it just makes it that much better. I’m not too sure how I didn’t know about this until about 20 minutes ago, but nonetheless here it is. Vampire Weekend doing a fantastic cover of one or my favorite Rancid songs, ‘Ruby Soho’.

But wait, there’s more! Vampire Weekend has also released a music video for “Giving Up The Gun”. The video is directed by The Malloys and features cameos from Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil’ Jon and RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.

CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival 2009 :: NYC

CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival 2009 :: NYC

Pretty much every music and film outlet is buzzing about this festival. I, unfortunately, do not live in New York nor do I have the means of getting there, but this seems really cool and I feel its worth mentioning.

Its not only worth mentioning because it is awesome, but the rocking DJ Scott Durday is spinning at this really spectacular festival. You know Scott from all of The Soundmen remixes. He sent me an email saying that he will be DJing the Canteen’s Showcase this weekend. It is a new venure at the Southstreet Seaport. He invite people that “want to hear great music and rock out with a killer view.” He will be there Friday evening starting at 8 pm, Brett Saxon and HERE will be performing along with multiple sets by Durday before and after. Then on Saturday he says that “the event really gets rolling with Mike Falzone, Moses, Tammy Infusino and Members Only playing” as well as sets from Durday in between and after. These events are sponsered by The Green Room, NYC’s best surf brand, and Branded Baron. He concludes by telling me that tons of drink specials and fun is to be had.

There is an insanely long list of bands going to be there, too many to list. Here is a link to that page. Some bands that caught my eye are Crystal Antlers, Turbo Fruits, The Antlers, The Depreciation Guild, Deer Tick, Japandroids, The Selmanaires and The Very Best, to name a few. Honestly the list is huge, so definitely go look at it if you plan on going and check out the schedule, too.

This is also a film festival so they will be showing some amazing independent films through out the week as well at various locations around the city. You should definitely hit that up if you have a chance.

This just a really cool way for new and old acts in the independent arena to get out there. So go if you can, I feel that you will not be disappointed.

The festival started yesterday (Tuesday 10/20) and goes through Saturday (10/24). Go check it out if you can, it sounds really awesome and I am insanely jealous of anyone that has the ability to make it out! And if you can’t make it then check out Brooklyn Vegan and Paste Magazine for the best updates on everything that is going on at CMJ.

Whip It! :: Movie Review

Whip It! :: Movie Review

Over the past weekend I was lucky enough to see the sneak peek of Whip It! due to come out this Friday. Go see it. Seriously.

Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with this one and its a knock out. Starring Ellen Page as Bliss, Whip It! involves a misfit from a small town trying to find her place in the world among roller derby babes and pageant queens. Based on the book by Shauna Cross by the same title, this movie will have you cheering for the underdog the entire way.

Bliss is a pageant queen that gets involved with the right kind of derby girls to show her that being who you are is all you need. She finds herself on a journey of bruises, heartache and becoming a hero.

Whip It! also starring Barrymore as Smashly Simpson, Andrew Wilson as Razor and an array of comedic vets including Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern and Kristen Wiig. Others include Juliette Lewis, Marcia Gay Harden and Eve.

“Be your own hero” and see this movie on October 2nd.

The soundtrack is amazing, too. Get it on September 29th. Here’s a track listing if you don’t believe me.

Pot Kettle Black – Tilly and the Wall
Sheen is a Punk Rocker – The Ramones
What’s the Attitude – Cut Chemist, Hymnal

If you get the soundtrack on iTunes it comes with two additional songs: Know How – Young MC and The Road to Austin – The Section Quartet.

Review Alert :: Intro5pect EP :: Record Profits

Review Alert :: Intro5pect EP :: Record Profits

intro5pect_rp_bigTen years ago, this intense band from southern California released it’s first self-titled 7″ on Geykido Comet Records.

This intense band is Intro5pect, they’ve been making music their own way for 12 years, after collaborating with punk rock vets such as Leftover Crack and Anti-Flag and releasing DIY music, they’re back with the Record Profits EP.

And this is just a taste of what you’ll be hearing in Spring 2010 with the release of a full length.

Record Profits blasts into your ears with “Work to Live”, a picturesque mix of punk guitars, pounding drums and a synth. This track will make you throw your fist while you’re dancing.

Another stand out track in this EP is “Collateral”. This song is so intense, so honest and it includes clips from previous speeches by American presidents. Intro5pect holds nothing back, this song proves it.

The EP ends with “Plastic World”. Sara Zaidi is putting up her middle finger, in a lyrical way with the help of guitars, drums and a keyboard.

My pick >> Plastic World >>

GC says:

Take the sing-along choruses of Anti-Flag, the electronic beeps and bzzzzzts of the Faint and mix it all with the rough, digital-hardcore electronic sounds of Atari Teenage Riot and that’s Intro5pect to a T.

They have been proving themselves for over a decade, they aren’t going to stop and thank the punk rock gods for that.

Record Profits will be available for download here on August 25.

AND don’t forget to follow GC Records on Twitter!
